The Hanks Question of the Week

Plastic bins... Shelves from Ikea... Bags hidden in the back of the closet so nobody else in the house makes fun of how much you have... How do you store your yarn/fiber stash?

I use Sterilite storage bins. I like the clear drawers because I can see most of the yarn at a glance, which helps remind me of the projects I was going to use the yarn for!

I have two of these (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/317HyXfkXnL._SS260_.jpg) and two half-size ones, purchased at Target and Walmart.

I have 2 of those pop-up laundry hamper thingies, with all the yarn in ziplocs, kind of stacked within. An open basket, again with ziplocked yarn "packets" and a backpack thingy (that was a horrible project bag) with my sock yarn in it. That has GOT to change soon, methinks. I don't have visibility of all My Precious...

Another vote here for the Sterilite drawers and boxes. I like being able to see everything. Makes me feel so organized, and you can always squish another skein of yarn in, so it doesn't look like you have quite so much.

I have my stash in a bunch of rubber made boxes that are probably 6 inches tall and 14 inches long. I have the yarn organized into "Worsted" "Sock" "Lace" "Sport and DK" and the like--well, I'm starting to organize it that way.

It works for the most part--the stuff I've bought recently usually gets wound and used before it can make it into the stash!

Just lucky I guess, but I have 2 large closets in my basement for yarn storage. I use a resealable plastic bag from the supermarket for each project and label it. I can then see the project name and yarn colors at a glance. I also use the clear plastic storage drawers for smaller projects (each small project in a separate, labeled plastic bag)and stack the boxes. One box might have lace yarns, another scarves, bags, etc.

I have four 32-quart Sterilite containers labled "solid worsted wool-ish," "handdyed worsted wool-ish," "sock yarn," and "handspun." And, one copy paper box of heavier-weight wool (mostly WoolEase Thick&Quick, but a few mystery wools friends brought me back from their research trips to Ireland & Scotland & Denmark &ct.) The only one I have to really squish to get shut is the "handdyed worsted wool-ish" one, the rest are about one-third to one-half full.

I'm definitely in the Sterilite camp (it keeps the kitties out of the yarn). How many, though? AHAHAHAHA grab a drink. I have ten large (58-Quart) and six small (20-Quart). The six small ones contain spinning fibers. As far as the large ones? Two are full of the wool from my dad's sheep. Two are full of sock yarn. One is about half-full of my handspun. One is full of odds and ends, ball ends, and old acrylic from "back in the day". Four are full of all the rest of my stash, and I am ashamed to say that it is barely organized, if at all. My organizational style consists of "great yarn I don't know what to do with yet" and "great yarn I have earmarked for a project".
