Charlene Schurch "Heels" class at Hanks!

Charlene Schurch "Heels" class at Hanks!

A few weeks ago, we had Charlene Schurch in for a book signing and to teach a class on different heel styles. We had a great time; the students had a great time; and Charlene had a great time - so it was really win/win all around.

The day started early, with the class beginning at 9 AM. Fortunately we had the coffee brewed, and between the hot coffee and the awesome goody bags we left out for the students, everyone started off the morning happy. The early part of the class seemed to go pretty well, as Sharon and I heard an awful lot of laughing from the other room.

Lunch, pizza and garlic rolls from Leonardo's, was popular! And towards the end of the lunchtime break, Charlene sat down and began to sign autographs (I tried not to get too fan-girl on her).

The second half of the class seemed pretty divided between quiet concentration, and raucous laughter.

All in all, it was Good Times - and we hope to have her back again next year!

Thanks to everyone who made this event such a success!

How does that yarn knit up? (part two)

Have you ever searched Ravelry for projects done up in a particular yarn before buying it, in case you don't like how it works up? Or gone ahead and bought it anyway, only to work it up in six different patterns before you find one you like? Well... we maybe can't help you with all yarns, but we can help you with the ones we dye ourselves!

IMG_7761

Here is a swatch knitted up in our sock yarn, in the colorways we have dyed that are meant to spiral (swatches of multi and semi-solids coming later this month). From top down, knitted on US 1 needles in the round with a stitch count of 68, we have Witch's Heart, The 80's Have Called, Chocolate Covered Fruit, and Apple Harvest.

If you're on Ravelry and have knitted with any of these colorways, we'd love to see your projects added to our group, if you haven't done that already! Or if you're not on Ravelry, we also have a Flickr group and we'd love to see your photos there, too.

Uptown Art Hop

The next Uptown Art Hop is coming up soon! Friday, February 12th, from 6-9. We will have spinning and knitting demonstrations all night, and of course wine, cheese, and general Good Times. This time Hanks is proud to be showing the artwork of science fiction writer Joe Haldeman (you can see some of his artwork online here). Joe will also be available to autograph books during the Art Hop - his latest novel, STARBOUND, has just been released.

Joe says about art -
It's been a casual hobby all my life, but in the past ten or fifteen years it's become more serious; more central. It started out with a simple idea, which I read in some forgotten magazine: keep a watercolor diary of your travels. It sounded like fun, more fun than taking snapshots, so over the years I've filled up a few notebooks with travel sketches.

Of course it's easy to get hooked. I play with oils and pastels as well as ink and watercolor, and even when I'm at home, I'll bike out and do landscapes. Once a week I go to a studio and draw and paint nudes, and I'm sure my wife believes that I spend several hours staring at naked women purely for the sake of art.

And it's not just Hanks hogging all the fun -- the district of Uptown at 43rd Street includes art galleries, businesses and restaurants in Millhopper Square, Thornebrook Village, and The Market Place. We'd love to have you join us! See a sampling of some of the best art in Gainesville, ranging from one-of-a- kind locally made art, to gifts from the far corners of the earth. A rickshaw shuttle will allow event goers to easily travel the short distance between stops.

As if you needed another reason, but... why else should you show up? Because Uptown Art Hop merchants will be selling raffle tickets with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to Florida's Eden's One Region One Book program. Tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. The prize is $150 in gift certificates (in $25 increments) valid at any participating location. Click here for more information.
