The Hanks Question of the Week
When you're planning your vacation crochet/knitting (I'm not the only one that does that, right...?) do you plan on bringing a bunch of small projects? Or one big project? And do you bring an emergency back-up project should the stars align and you wind up finishing what you bring with you? Or do you shop for vacation yarn, and start a new project while traveling?

On the rare occasion I take a vacation, I plan on buying yarn, this yarn will usually site and look pretty for a LONG time before I use it. I also take at least three skeins of sock yarn with me.
Vacation? What's that?
I always have a sock project when travelling (which is usually on business), and bring along an emergency backup project in case I finish en route.
Plan? What's that?
Me, I use my fool-proof, never fails way to not run out of knitting while on a trip.
I bring all four hundred million of my WIPS with me. Usually, this ends up meaning I bring more yarn than clothes.
Clothes can be washed, right?
I bring lots of projects. There's whatever I'm currently working on the most, something simple I can do in meetings (I used to travel for work), something more complex for hanging out in the hotel room, any other WIPs laying around that appeal to me while I'm packing, and a ball of kitchen cotton just in case I do everything else. Because you can never have too many dishcloths.
And a map to any local yarn shops I can find.
Bring two with plans to buy...
One (usually a sock) easy project that can get thrown in a bag and can start/stop easily (ie on a plane, in a car)
Another (usually more complicated or bigger) either deeper in the knitting bag or in my checked luggage. Only to get pulled out when I'm on a business trip and bored in the hotel, or if I'm awake earlier than other people - usually not a conversation-friendly project.
I always plan to go LYS (and pub!) crawling, but I've never cast on while on the trip that I bought the stuff. Only because I usually buy without an idea of what I want to do.
I tend to waffle back and forth, which means about five minutes before I have to close my suitcase, I do what Caitlin does-- I pack *everything*. And then I pack extra needles, extra yarn, and a list of all the yarn shops in the area. So basically... I have no plan. I *want* to have a plan! But they fail me!
I bring projects with me , whatever I can fit in my big basket and what will fit in my car. Usually I am taking Kristen to my moms, in South Carolina , so that leaves me little room!! I have not ever gotten a project done while on vacation. I love to look for yarn and stamp shops while on vacation.
I usually take along whatever is on the needles at the time, and I'll plan a project to start just before I leave or while I'm away. I always plan visits to the LYSs, but I don't plan on using that yarn on the trip. But then I get all excited about having new yarn and I cast on right away, once even in the car as we were leaving the parking lot. This time I'm actually planning my impromptu knitting!
