Countdown to Fiber-In (19 days)

It's just about three weeks until the Florida Fiber-in - are you going? We are!

Why should you go?

Well, among the other reasons we've already listed, you should go if you want to see any of our fiber or play with our wheels -- seriously! I don't know if you remember last year, but this is just the same; 100% of our fiber and all of our wheels are going to Fiber-In for the weekend. All of it! There will be absolutely no fiber on the shelves of our store the weekend of September 19/20... so if you have a hankering for fiber that weekend... go to Fiber-In!

Class: 2009 Afghan - The September Square

September 5 (Saturday) | 2:00-5:00 | $15 (no materials)/$30 (materials provided)

During 2009 we will be making an afghan. While the patterns will always be free (like the 2008 scarf patterns), we will be offering workshops for those that need a little jump-start. Classes will give you dedicated class time and instruction, a set of needles, and appropriate yarn for the project. Should you already have your yarn picked out, we are offering the workshop for half-price if you provide your own materials.

IMG_5031

September brings in twisted stitches, which are very similar to cables. September also has two very small cables.

During the class we will get you started on the September square. We will provide needles and the appropriate weight yarn for the afghan (all squares will call for a worsted weight yarn that gets between 4-5 sts/inch on a US 7-9 needle), get you cast on and the first pattern repeat accomplished. As mentioned above, if you already have your yarn picked out, we are offering the workshop for half-price for providing your own materials.

What you need to know how to do:
- cast on/bind off
- the knit stitch
- the purl stitch

What we'll teach you how to do:
- cable
- cable without a cable needle
- read charts

What materials are included:
- the pattern
- appropriate yarn (if needed)
- appropriate needles (if needed)
- a cable needle (if needed)

If providing own materials, please remember to bring a cable needle.

Classes do fill up early; so please reserve your space in the class by paying in advance as it is unlikely we will be able to accommodate walk-ins. Payment is required within 7 days of signing up for the class or within one week before the class begins (whichever comes first). All classes limited to five people unless otherwise stated. A minimum of 2 students is required for most classes to take place. If the minimum for a class is not reached within 48 hours of the class, we will cancel the class and contact you in regards to rescheduling or a refund. Individual classes/lessons available by request (prices may vary). Homework is required in most of our classes; we know that all of you have busy schedules but please be sure to allow time to finish the work needed for classes.

Countdown to Fiber-In (23 days)

It's just a little under a month until the Florida Fiber-in - are you going? We are!

Why should you go? Over the next month, we'll give you good reasons (just in case you haven't already booked your rooms, rented a car, etc, like SOME of us)... and here is reason #2:

If you are on Ravelry, you can check out their group; and then try to tell us that these people don't sound like a lot of fun! You know you want to spend the weekend with such an amazing group of spinning, knitting, and crocheting instigators. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!

Countdown to Fiber-In (32 days)

It's just a little over a month until the Florida Fiber-in - are you going? We are!

Why should you go? Over the next month, we'll give you good reasons (just in case you haven't already booked your rooms, rented a car, etc, like SOME of us)... starting with reason #1... our friend Celena, who dyes the very popular Rocket Yarn, is teaching a demo!

Sat. 19th, 2009

9:00 – 9:45 – Two Sock Yarn Dyeing Methods – Celena Crews, Rocket Yarn, Lake City, FL

Come see Celena share how she creates yarn to "Dye" for! Two of her sock yarn dyeing methods will be demonstrated and she will explain her "method vs. colorway" system of dyeing yarn.

Thursday evening Spin-a-long

Don't forget that on the third Thursday of the month, from 5-7, you can bring your wheel or drop spindle and some fiber and sit with others to do some spinning! This gathering is great for spinners who work or go to school during the day and can't get to the morning gathering.

See you on August 20th?

Ginger at the Walking Wheel

Pioneeeeeeeeer!

The August and September Lorna's Laces Knit-along pattern is Pioneer; I'll be doing mine in the Woodlawn colorway -

Future Pioneer

However, I am having horrible gauge problems.

Here's an excerpt from something I wrote on Ravelry, as back-story:

But here’s the process that I used to get to my correct cast-on number (and bear with me, for I’m sort of writing out my thought process rather than jumping to the conclusion, because I am about the most math-phobic knitter on the face of the planet):

Swatching: I knit a swatch on both 4’s and 3’s - I did the 3’s first as I am a loose, loose knitter and usually knit Shepherd Sport on 3’s. However, I have circular 4’s that are the length I need for this project, so I swatched on those as well. I’m getting 6.5 on the 4, and 6.75 on the 3, so I’m going with the 4’s.

Begging for logic in math: I want to make about the 38” bust, but if i am getting 6.5 stitches per inch, and I want the bust to be approximately 38 inches, then at the bust I should have approximately 247 stitches; which only really looks close to the numbers of the 50” size. Ack! brain!melting! So then. Let me see what Sally says about ratios (I accidentally took three classes from Sally Melville last year - long story - and was possibly insufferable for weeks with my knitting friends, only saying “Well, Sally says…” to every knitting question). OK; according to my notes, if gauge in the pattern is “puppies” and my personal gauge is “kittens” (I refuse to say “X” and “Y”, I have just.that.much. math anxiety), then puppies into kittens equals martinis (one of which I really want after thinking this much about math before lunchtime). So I should multiply by martinis every time my pattern says puppies. LOLwhut?! Using real numbers instead: the gauge in Pioneer is 5; my personal gauge is 6.5; 5 into 6.5 is 1.3; so every time I see a number in Pioneer, I should times it by 1.3. Sadly I do not have the numbers for the 38” because I am a slacker and kept forgetting to email and ask for it, so I’ll pull from the numbers for the 41”, which I’m guessing I’m going to wind up using anyway. After all of the neckline increases are done, at approximately the bust level, for the 41” numbers I should have 206 (at 5 sts/inch). If I times 206 by 1.3 I get 267, which is only 20 stitches more than I’m guessing I would have. The difference of those 20 stitches is approximately 3 inches, which is the difference between 38 and 41 - and I really hope y’all are still with me.

Conclusion: In playing around with that ratio formula, all of the numbers I’ve played with seem to indicate that the given numbers for the gauge that I’m getting means that I need to make between the 38” and 41” size. However, I’m not making this for me - I’m making it for [deleted to not ruin the surprise], who is roughly the same size as I am. I would much rather have it come out just a tad too large than a tad too small, so I have decided to use the numbers for the 41” size to make Pioneer.

However, what I'm getting on size 4 needles is so loose that it... it looks like cheesecloth. You can practically read through it. So... I'll be switching to size 3's, and going up one size in my knitting in order to compensate.

And I'm sooo glad this is a two-month knit-along!

Sock Club reminder

Spots in the 2009/2010 Sock Club will go up for sale tomorrow - Saturday 08/15/08, at 12:30 PM (Eastern time, or whatever Florida is on). Obviously if you are in town you can swing by after lunch. But what if you’re interested but aren’t local? Rather than put this up for sale as an item on our online store, we would prefer that you call us (352.338.7222) after 12:30 tomorrow so that we can go over the three different options with you, and discuss shipping.

Sock club spots will remain open until Monday, September 14th, or until we hit capacity (we will post here and on Ravelry if capacity is close to being achieved).

Here are some photos from the 2008/2009 club to pique your interest -
2008/2009 Hanks Yarn and Fiber sock club

There are three options for this club. Please read the three options carefully and choose the one that best suits your wants and desires.

Option 1 –
$100 for in-store pickup/$130 with shipping
You will get six 400-yard skeins of hand-dyed sock yarn, one each during the months of October, December, February, April, June, and August.

Option 2 –
$50 for in-store pickup/$65 with shipping
You will get three 400-yard skeins of hand-dyed sock yarn, one each during the months of October, February, and June.

Option 3 -
$50 for in-store pickup/$65 with shipping
You will get three 400-yard skeins of hand-dyed sock yarn, one each during the months of December, April, and August.

And now, the pinky swear: we promise to send you hand-dyed sock yarn and we promise to do our best to produce a quality product. We promise that the color for each month will not be for sale in our shop until six months after the month that we send it to you. We understand that the colors we choose to dye may not wind up being your particular favorite; we ask that just as we are not selling that color in a retail setting for six months, that you also do the same and promise not to sell anything you don’t like until after the six month mark.

Class: Introduction to Cables (Knit a Washcloth)

August 8 (Saturday) | 10:30-1:30 | $30

This pattern is a simple beginning to cables- which are not nearly as scary as they may seem to the new knitter! While it may sound complicated, it really is a pattern that anyone familiar with casting on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and binding off can do. This one-day class will get you started and get the first few repeats down; with your new skills you will be able to finish this up and bind off on your own.

2009: The Year of the Afghan (August)

IMG_4907

Once again in August, we are doing only a charted design, rather than written out; but don’t let that scare you. The columns are reminiscent of the March Square, but with cables tossed in rather than purl stitches.

Remember that charts are a lot easier than they look, as long as you don’t try to read them like a book– the right side rows are read right to left (as if you were looking at front of the knitted piece) and the wrong side rows are read left to right (as if you were going backwards across the front of the knitted piece). The every-fabulous Knitty.com has an article here that we recommend you look over. There is also a shorter article on About.com (here) that is pretty informative.

Don’t forget also that we have a FAQ page here; feel free to add your questions.

You can download the pattern from our website here, and the Ravelry page for the square is here.
